< img alt="the avengers"src="http://blog.filmfangear.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/4810359655_09ba350b08.jpg"width="400"/ > Image by wallyg USS Bowfin(SS/AGSS -287), a United States Navy Balao-class fleet attack submarine, was put down by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at Kittery, Maine on July 23, 1942; introduced one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1942 by Mrs. Jane Gawne, wife of Captain James Orville Gawne; and commissioned on Might 1, 1943, Commander Joseph H. Willingham in command. Nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, the 311-foot, 8-inch long Bowfin and her 80-man team are credited with sinking 16 Japanese vessels (and lots of more uncredited) with an overall tonnage of 67,882 lots during the course of her nine patrols over two years of World War II responsibility. At the war’s end, Bowfin left Pearl Harbor for active service with the Atlantic Fleet. She later functioned as a reserve training boat in Seattle, Washington, until her decommissioning at Pearl Harbor in 1971.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park opened in 1981 next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center in Pearl Harbor. The focal point of the museum is the The second world war submarine USS Bowfin (SS-287), which is open for public tours. Surrounding to the Bowfin is a 10,000 square foot museum which displays an outstanding collection of submarine-related artifacts such as submarine weapon systems, pictures, paintings, battleflags, initial recruiting posters, and detailed submarine designs, all illustrating the history of the United States Submarine Service. Many submarine-related artifacts litter the premises around the park, which likewise includes the Waterside Memorial, a public memorial honoring the 52 American submarines and the more than 3,500 submariners lost throughout The second world war.

USS Bowfin (SS-287) is a fleet attack submarine that fought in the Pacific during WWII, and helped to make famous the term, “Silent Service.” Bowfin was launched on 7 December 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, so it is fitting that her permanent home is at Pearl Harbor, Hawai’i.
